Malawi's northern lakeshore areas are preparing for severe weather this weekend. The Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services issued fresh warnings for April 4 and 5, 2026. According to the department, a cool airmass from the Indian Ocean will bring foggy and windy conditions, accompanied by isolated heavy rains and localized thunderstorms across the northern region.

Update: As extreme weather continues to cost Malawi approximately 1.7 percent of its annual gross domestic product, a recent environment feature by Nation Online highlighted the ongoing struggles of vulnerable communities. The April 2 report detailed how frequent disasters, including flash floods and dry spells, leave residents in hard-hit districts like Chikwawa with little time to rebuild shattered public infrastructure and agricultural livelihoods before the next storm hits.

Update: Conservation efforts are also continuing at Lake Malawi, where local divers in Cape Maclear have officially launched a volunteer initiative to combat plastic pollution. According to a Broadcast Media Africa report, the program is led by the Health, Education, Environment, and Economic Development nonprofit to protect the lake's endemic species from microplastics. The community response follows national data indicating that over 70 percent of the country's plastic waste is improperly disposed of.
