US Embassy Issues Lilongwe Security Alert as Government Warns Citizens Over Middle East Tensions

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued an advisory urging Malawian citizens living in the Middle East to remain vigilant as regional conflicts escalate, according to Nyasa Times. Additionally, Malawi Airlines has warned passengers that airspace closures across parts of the Middle East may disrupt connecting flights, advising travellers to check with their airlines and travel agencies for the latest updates.

In a related security development, the United States Embassy in Lilongwe issued a security alert on Monday, advising American citizens to avoid the Old Town area. The embassy reported that a large crowd had gathered near the Peace Corps offices and the Game and ShopRite shopping centres. According to the official alert, tear gas was deployed in the area, and the Malawi Police Service was on the scene to manage the situation.

Internationally, Malawi has joined a coalition of 84 United Nations Member States in signing a joint declaration at the UN Human Rights Council. The International Service for Human Rights reports that the pledge, updated on Monday, commits signatory nations to defending human rights multilateralism, protecting international law, and ensuring predictable funding for the UN human rights system.

An Irish Aid delegation recently visited Malawi to assess the ROAR programme, an initiative led by HelpAge International that focuses on the welfare of older citizens. According to HelpAge International, the Irish-funded programme has provided grants for income-generating activities and successfully advocated for the integration of age and disability considerations into the World Food Programme's 2025-2026 Lean Season Response in Malawi.

Finally, Malawi and other Southern African Development Community member states are preparing to present regional tourism integration progress at the ITB Berlin 2026 travel trade show, according to the African Travel and Tourism Association. Supported by the German government and the European Union, a special side event on March 4 will gather tourism officials, investors, and development partners to discuss ways to boost destination competitiveness across Southern Africa.
