According to a report from the Parliament of Malawi, the Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources and Climate Change has ordered the Lilongwe City Council to expedite the relocation of the Area 38 dumpsite to Nalikule. Following a site visit to the dumpsite, Committee Chairperson Tiaone Hendry expressed frustration over continuous delays dating back to 2019. The committee has issued a strict deadline of March 30, 2026, for the local council to submit a clear relocation roadmap and secure a consultant to conduct an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment. Hendry warned that lawmakers will closely monitor the council every month and expect to see visible progress on the ground by June.

Update: Economic commentators are highlighting a contradiction between the optimism of President Peter Mutharika's State of the Nation Address and the harsh realities of the recently presented K10.978 trillion national budget. Nyasa Times reports that while the president forecast an economic growth rate of 3.8 percent for 2026, the country's public debt has reached K23.9 trillion. Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha recently acknowledged that this debt now exceeds 90 percent of the Gross Domestic Product, a level considered unsustainable. Because of this debt burden, the government is expected to spend K2.793 trillion this year just to cover interest payments. Analysts note that this massive allocation to service old loans leaves very little room to fund the infrastructure and development projects promised by the administration.
