Malawi is currently hosting the 2026 Annual Meeting of National Neglected Tropical Diseases Programme Managers, a public health conference co-convened by the African Union Commission and the World Health Organisation. Opened in Lilongwe on April 13 by the Minister of Health, the gathering brings together policymakers from across the continent to coordinate strategies for eliminating tropical diseases by 2030, according to the World Health Organisation. The event highlights the country's prior international health successes, including the elimination of conditions such as trachoma and lymphatic filariasis.

In diplomacy and trade, the Malawian government has opened talks with India to discuss the adoption of a cashless digital payments model. According to TechAfrica News, Minister of Information and Communications Technology Dr. Shadric Namalomba met in Lilongwe with the Indian High Commissioner and a delegation from the National Payments Corporation of India on April 13. The meetings focused on implementing India's Unified Payments Interface to improve financial accessibility and streamline transactions across Malawi.

A new Afrobarometer survey published on April 13 reveals that 69 percent of Malawians want African countries to have a greater voice in international bodies such as the United Nations. The poll, reported by AllAfrica, also found that roughly half of the population believes Malawi's national interests are adequately represented within the African Union and the Southern African Development Community.

An April 13 study published by the University of Kansas indicates that international non-governmental organisations working to combat child marriage in Malawi often struggle due to foreign funding constraints. The researchers found that international aid approaches sometimes fail because they prioritise donor goals over local knowledge and cultural realities, leading the Malawian government to seek better coordination with foreign partners under its 2024 to 2030 national strategy.
