Update: Following an earlier defeat to Australia in the opening round of the FIFA Series 2026, the Malawi women's national football team concluded their tournament campaign with a 3-2 loss to India in the third-place play-off on Wednesday. According to Olympics.com, the match took place at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya. India took an early lead before Khumalo Ireen equalised for the Scorchers in the 42nd minute. After India reclaimed the advantage just before halftime, Henry Deborah scored for Malawi in the 60th minute to level the match again. An 84th-minute goal by Indian substitute Priyadharshini Selladurai ultimately decided the match, leaving Malawi with a fourth-place finish.
Update: Building on previous reports of the squad travelling to South Africa, Spar Proteas head coach Jenny van Dyk has formally welcomed the inclusion of the Malawi Under-21 national team into the 2026 Telkom Netball League. SABC Sport reports that the Malawian squad will participate by invitation alongside the Zambezi Eagles, marking the first time a team from Malawi will compete in the league. Van Dyk stated that bringing the Malawian side into the competition will benefit local South African players by exposing them to different styles of play while supporting the regional development of the sport.
