Update: A labour standoff is intensifying in Malawi's higher education sector. According to Nyasa Times, the Public Universities Staff Union (PUSU) is demanding a 50 to 60 percent salary increment starting in April 2026. PUSU President Jimmy Gondwe directed union leaders at public universities, including LUANAR, Mzuzu University, and the University of Malawi (UNIMA), to begin negotiations immediately.

The union warned of potential industrial unrest and a deepening brain drain if the government fails to address their financial pressures. Gondwe cited worsening economic conditions, noting an average inflation rate of 27 percent and cumulative fuel price increases as the primary reasons for the salary demand.

Meanwhile, the Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB) is hiring additional staff for the upcoming examination cycle. Great Malawi Jobs reports that the board announced vacancies for Temporary Examinations Assistants to help sort and mark the 2026 national examinations. Applicants must hold a Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) and will work directly under the Examinations Administration Department. The deadline for receiving applications is April 24, 2026.
