Update: Flood recovery efforts in Malawi are currently stalled because the national Disaster Risk Management Trust Fund is completely empty, Nation Online reports. Over 300,000 internally displaced people are now sheltering in 84 camps across several district councils. The Department of Disaster Management Affairs faces a K17 billion deficit for its immediate humanitarian response and an additional K71 billion shortfall for the upcoming lean season food response.

In the southern region, Chikwawa District is experiencing severe devastation after continuous heavy rainfall caused rivers to burst their banks. According to Islamic Relief, the disaster has affected more than 200,000 people, with displaced families seeking refuge in 31 temporary camps within the district. Rising floodwaters have destroyed vital crops and damaged roads, leaving many rural communities isolated.

Humanitarian agencies state that the immediate needs of flood survivors are growing much faster than available aid. With more than four million Malawians already classified as food insecure, relief organisations warn that the widespread loss of agricultural assets will further threaten local food supplies and increase the likelihood of waterborne diseases in the displacement camps.
