Malawian Vice President Jane Ansah has emphasized the need for economic justice and stronger legal enforcement to protect women's rights across Africa, according to an April 19 report from Businessday NG. Speaking at an event honoring United Nations Special Rapporteur Joy Ngozi Ezeilo, Ansah noted that while many African nations have ratified key anti-discrimination instruments, gender inequality persists. She stated that progressive laws do not automatically guarantee protection when operating within systems shaped by customary and religious practices, weak enforcement mechanisms, and entrenched patriarchal norms. Ansah added that regional development will remain incomplete until structural economic barriers facing women are dismantled.

Update: New details have emerged in the ongoing political and financial investigation into the Public Service Pension Trust Fund's K128.75 billion purchase of the Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre. According to an April 17 report by the Mail & Guardian, a leaked 294-page Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee report outlines how the pension fund's governance structure was bypassed after the board initially rejected the acquisition. Independent assessors had valued the property at approximately K47 billion, significantly lower than the final purchase price, ISS Africa reported on April 17. The Anti-Corruption Bureau is currently tracking nearly K5.5 billion in suspicious cash withdrawals linked to the transaction. The Mail & Guardian notes that the investigation has faced practical constraints following the recent reassignment of senior officials at the Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Financial Intelligence Authority earlier this month. Meanwhile, ISS Africa highlighted that the inquiry is extremely tangled, citing suspicions of witness bribery.
