Update: The Malawian government is urgently seeking K48.84 billion to address a worsening humanitarian crisis following severe floods, according to a report by Nyasa Times published on allAfrica.com. The official death toll has risen to 37, with 233 people injured. More than 81,000 households have been affected, and over 26,000 families are currently displaced across 84 temporary camps. Disaster Management Affairs Commissioner Wilson Moleni noted that the destruction of over 34,000 hectares of crops could trigger secondary issues such as food shortages and malnutrition.

Update: In weather developments, the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services issued a yellow severity alert on April 20 for strong Mwera winds over Lake Malawi and other regional water bodies. The department advised lake users to exercise caution, as wind speeds are forecast to exceed 45 kilometres per hour beginning April 22. According to the latest five-day weather outlook, the country will transition from warm conditions with isolated showers in northern lakeshore areas to cloudy and windy weather with light rain across most regions, driven by a south-easterly air mass.
