Update: Doctors Challenge Private Clinic Ban

Doctors and health professionals are pushing back against the recent government directive banning public health workers from operating private clinics. According to a March 2 report by DW, medical practitioners plan to challenge the legality of the ban. They argue that it could negatively affect overall medical care in the country. Health analyst Maziko Matemba stated that the government should explore alternative ways to ensure doctors remain available in public hospitals without completely prohibiting them from running private practices.

Post-Flood Malaria Risks Increase

Following severe rainfall and flooding in early 2026, researchers warn that Malawi is entering a high-risk period for malaria transmission. According to a March 3 analysis by University of Pretoria scientists published via The Conversation and Gavi, receding floodwaters have left behind environmental conditions that heavily favour mosquito breeding. The experts noted that these post-flood outbreaks threaten to disrupt malaria control efforts and place additional strain on local health services just as communities attempt to rebuild.

Nursing Leadership Programme Completion

In an effort to strengthen medical workforce capacity, 50 mid-level nurses and midwives in Malawi recently completed a specialized leadership programme. According to a March 3 announcement by the Florence Nightingale Foundation, the training was delivered in partnership with the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi. The project resulted in an 86 percent increase in participants' self-efficacy and improved their ability to advocate for better patient care. The nurses completed specific practical projects targeting reductions in maternal mortality, neonatal deaths, and avoidable infections.

Kamuzu Central Hospital Pathology Update

In hospital developments, the UNC Project-Malawi Cancer group released a March 2 update on the pathology laboratory at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe. According to the report, ongoing laboratory improvements have played a direct, positive role in supporting regional cancer diagnostics and improving adult oncology research within the country.
