Ethanol distiller Press Cane Limited has completed the construction of a K10 billion processing facility designed to convert industrial waste into organic fertiliser, according to Nyasa Times. Press Cane Chief Executive Officer Bryson Mkhomaanthu stated that the new plant turns waste into productive agricultural assets while eliminating the risk of future environmental spills. The announcement follows a recent High Court decision by Justice Allan Hans Muhome, who dismissed a K6.6 billion compensation claim brought against the company by Dr. Steve Kamiza and 56 local residents who alleged that previous waste leaks had damaged their crops and farmland.
Update: Agricultural experts continue to warn the government that ad hoc export bans are harming the farming sector, according to Nyasa Times. During a recent policy dialogue in Lilongwe, LUANAR senior economist Dr. Innocent Pangapanga Phiri and MwAPATA Institute researcher Dr. Christone Nyondo stated that sudden trade restrictions undermine producer incentives and ultimately cause long-term crop shortages. The researchers urged authorities to focus on increasing domestic productivity through improved seed systems and better soil health rather than relying on reactive export limits.
