The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) is facing public backlash after questioning the execution plans of the 2026/2027 national budget, according to Nyasa Times. The HRDC agreed that the budget accurately reflects Malawi's stagnant growth, soaring inflation, and foreign exchange shortages. However, the coalition argued it lacks a practical roadmap for economic reform. In response, citizens and political analysts criticized the watchdog group on social media, highlighting a broader public frustration with both government institutions and civil society over persistent economic hardships.

In related economic news, experts are warning that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East could soon drive up domestic inflation and weaken the kwacha, Nyasa Times reports. Analysts caution that rising international oil and fertiliser prices will increase the demand for foreign currency while inflating transport and agricultural costs. Ministry of Energy spokesperson Joana Thaundi stated that the government is closely monitoring global supply chains. However, economists are urging authorities to exercise vigilance and take swift action through early planning before prices escalate.

Update: Following the recent approval of a $43 million Chinese infrastructure grant, the Center for Investigative Journalism Malawi reports that the two nations have also signed a K2.4 trillion railway agreement. The $1.37 billion project will link Lilongwe to Mbeya in Tanzania. The deal arrives as Malawi's foreign exchange reserves remain critically low and public debt sits at 88 percent of gross domestic product. According to the center, this increasing reliance on Chinese financing follows the collapse of Malawi's $175 million International Monetary Fund loan program, which ended automatically last year due to an overvalued exchange rate and insufficient revenue collection.
