The official opening match of the 2026-2027 FDH Premiership between defending champions Mighty Wanderers and Karonga United failed to take place on Saturday due to an ongoing standoff between the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) and the Super League of Malawi (SULOM), Pan-Africa Football reports. Both teams turned up at Blantyre's Kamuzu Stadium in vain after FAM maintained its stance that the facility is unfit to host elite matches because it did not meet Club Licensing requirements.
SULOM had scheduled the fixture at the stadium to accommodate the launch activities of the league's new sponsor, FDH Bank. However, FAM issued a statement warning that no matches would be authorised at Kamuzu Stadium until an inspection is completed and the venue becomes fully compliant. This forced the cancellation of the match, according to Pan-Africa Football.
In netball, the Malawi Under-21 national team secured a 53-44 victory over the KwaZulu-Natal Kingdom Queens in their Telkom Netball League debut on Friday in Durban, SABC Sport reports. Captain Mphatso Banda credited the squad's ability to execute their training for the opening win, noting that the team controlled the match from the first quarter.
The Malawian youth side, known as the Queen Cubs, is participating as a guest team during Power Week 1 of the South African competition. According to SuperSport, goal attacker Florence Jeke was named Player of the Match for her role in attack. Banda added that the players are using the short tournament to push for senior national team call-ups ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, SABC Sport notes.
