The Government of Malawi has secured an $80 million grant from the World Bank to improve local government operations and ease ongoing foreign exchange shortages, Nyasa Times reports. Minister of Finance Joseph Mwanamvekha finalized the agreement during the annual International Monetary Fund and World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C., returning with the funds intended to target grassroots governance challenges.

Rather than providing traditional budgetary support, the newly acquired funds are specifically earmarked for the second phase of the Governance to Enable Service Delivery Project, according to Nyasa Times. The initiative channels resources through the International Development Association directly to all 32 local councils across the country. Authorities expect the injection to strengthen the councils' ability to plan and budget for essential public services, such as water supply, sanitation, and education infrastructure.

The financial boost arrives as Malawi continues to face severe forex shortages that have slowed industrial activity and raised the cost of living, Nyasa Times notes. By focusing on decentralization, the government hopes the grant will build local administrative capacity and improve transparency at the community level, directly addressing historical issues of underfunding and delayed civic projects in the districts.
