The Producers and Audio Engineering Association of Malawi has initiated a debate within the local music industry after proposing a standard studio session fee of K1 million, according to Nation Online. Association president Percy Manyozo, also known as Propee, stated that the fee adjustment responds to an estimated 26 percent increase in the cost of living, alongside the need to sustain investments in advanced technology and facility improvements.
The proposal has faced resistance from artists and music executives who argue a universal pricing model is impractical. Malawian artist Piksy acknowledged that producers deserve fair compensation but cautioned that a K1 million flat rate could restrict access for new talent. He noted that most Malawian artists are still developing and cannot afford such high studio costs, Nation Online reports. Music executive Kelvin Sulugwe of Akometsi also dismissed the plan, arguing that a K1 million fee would only serve a very small market and comparing the proposal to a builder demanding a share of a homeowner's rent after constructing a house.
Meanwhile, Malawian musicians continue to release new tracks this week. According to the music platform Amati Zambiri, April 27 saw fresh singles from multiple artists, including Chisomo with 'Ndampeza,' Kero Soft with 'Benz,' Stinnzo Mw with 'Dziko,' and Ronic Mw featuring Pablo Marley with 'Noni Noni'. Additionally, Copt released a new single titled 'My Dear' on April 26.
