Malawi has secured an $80 million grant from the World Bank to support the second phase of the Governance to Enable Service Delivery Project, according to Nyasa Times. Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha finalized the agreement during the recent International Monetary Fund and World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C. Channel Africa reports that the funds, provided through the International Development Association, will be directed to all 32 local councils to improve public service delivery, technical skills, and financial management.
In addition to the governance grant, the government is pursuing an emergency funding package under the World Bank's Rapid Response Facility to cushion the economy from global supply shocks. Nyasa Times reports that the World Bank is preparing an additional $100 million package under this facility. The Nation notes that these funds are expected to provide immediate fiscal relief, helping the country manage rising fuel and fertiliser prices caused by ongoing international conflicts.
