Malawi is increasing efforts to eliminate neglected tropical diseases by 2030 amid shrinking global donor support, according to Nation Online. Speaking at the Annual NTD Programme Managers Meeting in Lilongwe, Minister of Health Madalitso Baloyi announced that the government is prioritising these diseases in the national budget to secure consistent funding. World Health Organization Country Representative Charles Kuria Njuguna urged the country to strengthen its domestic financing mechanisms to prevent the reversal of health gains in vulnerable rural communities.

In related public health developments, Malawi recently concluded a nationwide polio vaccination campaign, reaching more than 6.2 million children under the age of 10, the World Health Organization reports. The initiative achieved a 103 percent coverage rate across all districts. The campaign relied on community mobilisation efforts led by health surveillance assistants, teachers, and local leaders to educate families and secure parental consent.

Health authorities are also expanding their digital infrastructure to combat non-communicable diseases, according to DHIS2. As part of the multi-country Diabetes Compass project, the Ministry of Health is integrating diabetes and hypertension screening and patient tracking into its national Community Health Information System. The digital rollout aims to establish better community screening mechanisms, follow-up care, and referral pathways for patients.

Medical training capacity in Malawi received international support this week. The East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust in the United Kingdom donated Basic Life Support mannequins to Kamuzu Central Hospital and the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, ESNEFT reports. The medical equipment will be used to train critical care nurses and improve life-saving CPR instruction capabilities in the country.
