In regional diplomacy, former Malawian President Joyce Banda is scheduled to travel to Antananarivo on May 6 to evaluate the political situation in Madagascar. Africa Intelligence reports that Banda is leading a Southern African Development Community (SADC) Panel of Elders mission. She was assigned to the role by the SADC organ responsible for politics, defence, and security to assess the new regime following recent political instability.
Additionally, Malawi is advancing its regional trade integration through a new Coordinated Border Management National Strategy. On April 28 and 29, the SADC Secretariat, in collaboration with the European Union and the German development agency GIZ, hosted a validation workshop in Lilongwe to finalize the initiative, according to a statement from SADC. The strategy aims to streamline border agency operations, attract foreign direct investment, and improve regional value chains.
Update: The government has formally announced the approval of an $80 million World Bank grant to finance the second phase of the Governance to Enable Service Delivery program.
