Update: Tobacco Network Demands Fair Prices as Malawi Advances Livestock and Border Strategies

Thursday, April 30, 2026

Update: Following earlier reports of record rejection rates at the opening of the 2026 tobacco marketing season, the Media Network on Tobacco (MNT) has backed the government in demanding better compensation for growers. According to MBC Online, MNT President Alfred Chauwa urged buying companies to adhere to the minimum pricing guidelines established under the Tobacco Industry Act. Chauwa warned that the current low prices and high auction rejection rates threaten smallholder farmers and could negatively affect the crop's role in generating foreign exchange.

In the livestock sector, veterinary professionals and agricultural stakeholders gathered in Lilongwe for an Annual General Meeting to establish stronger operational ties. MBC Online reports that experts highlighted the necessity of joint efforts among government agencies, private veterinarians, academia, and local farmers. Officials noted that improving animal health and ensuring the safety of locally produced livestock products requires a unified strategy rather than working in isolation.

Efforts to streamline agricultural trade and regional market access are also progressing following a two-day validation workshop for Malawi's Coordinated Border Management National Strategy. Held in Lilongwe between April 28 and April 29, the event was organized by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in partnership with the European Union and Germany. According to SADC, the strategy aims to speed up cross-border trade, attract foreign direct investment, and improve the competitiveness of Malawian agricultural exports and businesses.
